HEALTH

The First Primary Health Centre in Kannur District — The State Government was planning to have Primary Health Centres in every village of Kannur District. Primary Health Centres were established as an integral part of the Community Development Programme. This was an excellent move, but then the catch was that the Government needed land and also a financial donation of Rs. 15,000/- to execute this project. It was at this moment that A.K.Nair offered to give land and the donation of Rs. 15,000/- way back in 1968, and thus Azhikode was the first village in Kannur district to have a Primary Health Centre. The foundation stone was laid by A.K.Nair in the presence of J.S. Jesudasan, District Collector of Kannur. This was a moment of great celebration and joy for the local populace.

The Maternity Centre was inaugurated by N.K.Balakrishnan, Health Minister, Govt of Kerala, in 1971. The Raja Rajeswari family members had also organised a Maternity Centre adjacent to the Primary Health Centre in the name of Madhavi Amma, wife of A.K.Nair.
